Prefecture of Larissa
The Prefecture of Larissa is part of the Region of Thessaly in Greece and constitutes the second level of local government and is financially and administrative autonomous. The Prefectural authority constitutes an administrative division of the region of Thessaly and coincides with the administrative district of the prefecture. The prefecture is situated in the northern part of Thessaly Region and occupies the biggest part of Thessaly Plain and includes 28 municipalities and 4 communities. It is the second largest prefecture of Greece and covers an area of total 5.381km2 which amount 4% of the total territory of Greece and one–third of the Region of Thessaly and is the 6th biggest prefecture in terms of population.
The prefecture has general responsibility and wields public authority that is all its responsibilities, inside its territorial region and apart from its administrative role as a local government is responsible for the financial, social and cultural development of its district. Its main responsibilities are the management of the tourism policy of the prefecture, the development of policies for the development of the tourism activity and the alternative forms of tourism, the application of actions and programmes regarding the protection of the environment and the agricultural development such as agrotourism, and improvement of farming. It is also responsible for the upgrading of the urban environment and its infrastructures in the main and secondary urban centres and the tourist areas with the cooperation of other local authorities and for the elaboration of studies on spatial development, environmental protection and social infrastructures.
The prefecture office is situated in the capital of the prefecture, in Larissa City, which is the administrative centre of the Prefecture.
